Website edition

The complete illustrated book and included atlas content are free to explore in this website edition. There is no website account, checkout or subscription.

Start exploring

Enter the atlas to begin with the sky. Use Explore to visit worlds, Find a world to search, Learn to follow an idea, or Journeys to open the explorers’ stories. Planet appearances and journeys include artistic and fictional material; the science panels retain the relevant qualifications and sources.

Read the whole book

Open the book from the welcome page or atlas. Portrait phones show one original page at a time; landscape phones, tablets and wider screens show aligned two-page spreads. Use the page controls to turn pages, and Zoom or Fit for a closer look. Rotating your phone keeps the page you were reading visible.

Choose your sky and sound

Home’s Set location & time lets you find a city or enter coordinates. Use my location asks your browser for permission only when you choose it. If permission is unavailable or denied, use a city or coordinates instead. Forget saved location clears the saved observing place.

Open Controls and use Sound for ambient music and interface sounds. Your browser may require a tap or click before sound can begin. Recorded book narration is not an active website feature.

Progress, connection and graphics

Reading position, visited worlds and preferences stay in this browser when its storage is available. They do not sync to another browser or app. Private browsing or clearing site data can remove them.

The website needs a connection to load its pages and assets. It is not offered as an offline-installed app. Some selected galaxy images and external research links use other websites. If a 3D view cannot load, include your browser and device details when you contact support.

App information

These notes provide technical information about the separate app editions. Each edition keeps its own settings and reading history.

iPad technical information

The iPad edition is in preparation. These notes describe its controls and local settings.

Restore an existing purchase

If an existing Apple purchase is not recognized, use Restore Purchases with the Apple Account originally used for that purchase. Never email your password. For a charge or refund request involving Apple, see Apple’s refund request guidance.

Visit a world and read

In the iPad Explore scene, tap an object once to inspect its name and information, then tap the same object again to travel. Drag to look around, and pinch or use zoom controls. Go home · Earth visits Earth; Solar System opens the wider system view.

The book uses illustrated two-page spreads. Its compact toolbar provides page and viewing controls. Use the labeled Close book action to leave the reader.

Location, Read aloud and saved visits

Choose a city or manual coordinates in Set location & time. Use my location is optional. If permission is denied, choose a city instead. Forget saved location removes the saved observing place.

Read aloud uses installed iPad system speech voices on compatible book and information content, with pause, resume, stop, voice and speed controls. It does not record your voice. Reading may pause when the app leaves the foreground. This is an iPad feature, separate from archived recorded narration.

Visits, reading position and preferences are saved locally on the iPad. My journey is a local visit history. Included book and catalog assets are bundled; optional survey images and research websites need a connection.

Fire TV technical information

If you are using the Fire TV edition and need help, include the device model, Fire OS version, app version and the remote-button sequence that led to the issue.

Browser reading history and settings do not synchronize with the Fire TV edition.

Android technical information

If you are using an Android version and need help, include the device model, Android version, app version and the steps that led to the issue.

Browser reading history and settings do not synchronize with another app.
